Will the training be held on-line?
Yes, the training will take place on a virtual platform; advance instruction will be provided on use of the platform. Lab instruction will take place by our facilitation team; all participants will be provided with materials to perform the labs, as instruction takes place.
How many teachers are selected each year?
This year approximately 20 middle level and 20 high school level teachers will be selected from all eligible applications received.

I teach Family and Consumer Science, Agriscience, Health Education or Food Science. May I apply?
Yes! We have always welcomed teachers from these disciplines to apply for our professional development program, and over the years, many have been selected to participate. In fact, this professional development opportunity has led to some great partnerships between FCS and science teachers, since the curriculum we use addresses both science and FCS standards. We welcome the knowledge the other disciplines bring – it enriches the program!
What are the Eligibility Requirements?
To be eligible to participate in the Professional Development Program in Food Science, you must:
  • Hold US Citizenship
  • Be employed full time as a middle school or secondary school teacher (Grades 6-12)
  • Teach science, FCS or health education in a US School, including the DoD school system
  • Have at least three years of consecutive, full-time teaching experience (by the program start date)
  • Have an up-to-date teaching certificate that will be uploaded as part of your application
What criteria are used to select participants?
Applications are judged on a 75 point scale as follows:
  • Academic and professional experience: 20 points
  • Essay Questions: 40 points
  • Certification: Required
  • Letter of Recommendation and Support: 15 points
  • Applications are judged by a panel of professional teachers, not by FDA or NSTA. The program is administered by Graduate School USA. Grammar and punctuation do count!
I am not a certified teacher. Can I apply?
You must be a certified teacher in order to apply. However, if your current school does not require a teaching certificate, please submit a Letter of Explanation in lieu of the certificate document.
How will I know if I've been selected?
Applicants will be notified of their status by email on May 29, 2020.
I am unable to complete the application online. Is there still a way that I may apply?
